EDIFIED  You might consider adding extending 10 days every time you release a new version. Otherwise I, who had complaints before, can't try out an update to see what's been fixed and whether I have additional feedback or care to purchase MUD.

Cheers,

SSCHMIED  Not sure why my original post isn't available any more . . .

Just wanted to comment that I've downloaded the programme again after reading something about a "silent update" and it's now showing what it should (before it was stubbornly convinced I had only 39 applications on my Mac.) As I've already mentioned (in internet nirvana somewhere) I think this is a great idea for keeping tabs on your applications and whatnot. I agree that most apps automatically download the latest version - or at least suggest it - but I do like to have a general overview of what I have. And let's be honest: $20 for a whole year is too much? How much did you pay for your last pizza? Your last tank of fuel? Complaining about a little under $2 per month is, in my opinion, silly.

Many thanks for whenever, whatever, whoever did to get things straightened out again :-)

RCARLTON  This kind of app is by nature a byzantine undertaking to write.

Not all publishers deliver their apps the same way, and an app like this has to be something like the "VLC of installers" in terms of knowing as many apps and methods as possible.

That being said, after a day's worth of rough start - I'm finally up to date.

I think this is a good app. It's a bit young - but well worth the price if like me - you get busy with work and can't keep up with the latest incremental updates.

A very, very welcome feature would be some method of prioritizing the update downloads instead of the all-at-once model.

I realize that most of the time this only affects new installs, but some sort of preference that allows "Update apps in groups of x" or "If an app can't be updated mark to skip and move on" would be most welcome. My net connection got so saturated a couple of times that every update started failing one by one.

Or - when the list of updates is presented, a method to select/deselect individual or multiple updates [Update selected apps] and and options to Update/Cancel/Resume via Contextual Menu and/or buttons would be nice too.

In my case, I had something like 50 updates needed and it overwhelmed the app. Oftentimes, it was impossible to tell until I'd let the app do its thing. A number of apps wouldn't update until I deleted the original app manually, and it took at least 10 times running MacUpate before I got everything working.

And - some apps - especially games - installed Trials on top of purchased games - that somehow reverted the games back to trials.

BUT - that being said - it's off to a great start, and I'm looking forward to it getting better and better.

JOEL MUELLER  Thanks for your input. I have a few suggestions or semi-solutions for a couple things you were looking for. Instead of downloading and installing everything, you can simply double-click individual listings that you want to update. That's pretty similar to selecting an update, one at a time, and asking it to then download all of the selected updates. It just starts the process for each individual update right away instead of waiting for you to finish your group of selections.

As if something doesn't update, you can skip it and move by right clicking (or use the action menu below) and tell the listing to,"Set version to current" or "Don't check for updates." By setting the version to current, it'll ignore the update until the next time a new release happens. By selecting not to check for updates, it will ignore updates indefinitely until you manually re-active it.

JEFFREY MCPHEETERS  I want to second the suggestion to manage updates across the LAN. We have 5 users in our family and I manage all the updates through a single system. With a 50GB cap on monthly bandwidth, I try and conserve this when possible. Please allow the software to identify a 'central' download directory for all users so that updates can be applied locally when available.

NEOSMITH  What I would like to see is where it will download the file into a folder name of the Software and the file name to contain the version number. Of course the version number being in the file name is up to the developer but then again they should always put it in there!!

EDIFIED  Wahoo! Finally rewritten! It looks a lot better- just a few comments. The details box is pretty but it sacrifices readability. Maybe reduce the white highlight or increase the contrast. How about listing requirements as some updates...ummm...require stuff.

How about calling it just "MacUpdate". Simplicity.

Printing...I don't know who would want to print but as long as it's there make it print something useful and pretty.

How about separators for the update menu. The contextual menu gets it right.

Command-f should put the focus in the filter box, please.

Command-i should toggle the info pane.

Command-s for Don't Check? What?? Save?

Also the info panel toggle button belongs next to the contextual gear, not next to the +- watch list buttons.

I'd like a contextual menu on the table header for choosing Columns to view.

It's not clear what "Set to Current Version" is for, it's especially not clear how to "Unset Current Version".

Filtering seems to only work on app titles when it should work on description, license, location...everything that is visible in the table. If you're at odds with this suggestion maybe do titles by default and add a pull down arrow to the search box icon with the options "Titles", "All Visible Columns" and "Everything". That would help a lot :)

Adding an interface for comments and reviews would be helpful. At the very least show stars. I know it sounds silly for apps we already own but it adds value to your site by adding content. It's also nice to read through comments about the newer version to see if there's troubled waters ahead ;)

On my one test download, resuming a download failed. It appears to have just started over- if that's by design then we'd like resumable downloads please.

Can we move expanded files to the trash after they're copied? Actually, ideally it goes like this: Download archive, unarchive, move old version to trash, move unarchived new version to old version's previous location. Why anyone would want an unarchived copy of an already installed application in their downloads folder is beyond me.

If someone want's to save copies I think it should be ~/Downloads/MacUpdate/2009-10-29/ thus avoiding a bunch of MacUpdate prepended folders in the downloads folder.

Make these updates available over bonjour to the local network, verifying sigs with macupdate.com. When MUD (haha) finds an available update it should look for a LAN server first and save the bandwidth! Not to mention it'd be super fast. Peer updates. Make use of those five install licenses.

Some of my apps appear to have more recent than "current versions" how do you resolve this? Does Download+Install overwrite the new version? Either way the interface is unclear.

Please cache update results, Put "Last Updated: 5 Minutes Ago" in the footer next to "107 Items". Put it in the preferences if you need to: Check for App Updates [At Launch, Hourly, Daily, Weekly, Manually].

Modal progress indicators? Really? Throw progress in the bottom left corner above the add/remove watchlist buttons. Or use spinners over the update counts. Or both.

Speaking of which the update watch list counts should list the number of updates available, not the total list count. Or you could use "14/107". In any case, 14 is the more useful number.

Finally I suggest reducing the price. Not that it's not worth $20 but I think you'll rake in a lot more sales at $8. We buy things based on BOTH what something is worth and what we care to afford. And what's with subscription software? Bleh. I understand it's a service but it sure feels dirty. Sooooo....

I certainly HOPE you're planning the MUD integrated MacUpdate Store. Then you can just release this app for free and rake in loads of cash everyday from your low 5-10% listing and hosting fee :)

DP8  Thanks for your comments and suggestions - we fully welcome feedback and ideas! Many of your ideas are already part of our plans - today's release of 5.0 is just the beginning for us. There are technical reasons behind how some of the functions work, and we fully realize that there is room for improvement. We are committed to making MacUpdate Desktop the best update solution on the Mac - thanks again for your feedback!

DP8  "Set to Current Version" will override the local version number reported with the current version number from MacUpdate.com. This can be useful especially when developers make a mistake and do not properly update the version information when they release a new version. When this happens, MacUpdate will continually report the app as out-of-date, even when it is actually the latest. We work closely with developer to try to get them to fix their errors, but this is a stop-gap solution for our users.

How to "Unset Current Version"? - there is no reason to unset - if a newer version comes out, it will be reset and updated to hopefully the new correct version number, unless the developer makes a mistake again.

DANA SUTTON  The come-on blurb, presumably supplied by the developer, says "DESCRIPTION

MacUpdate Desktop is the best way to automatically keep all the software on your Mac up-to-date. Apple Software Update only updates Apple branded apps. " But in one way, this app. does not match Software Update: that app. periodically self-launches at user-specified intervals, this one only works when the user launches it when and if the user remembers to do that. This would be a lot more useful if it had some kind of automated feature similar to that of Software Update. If it did, I'd give it fives across the board.

VERYVITO  As a several-times daily visitor to Macupdate, I've been interested in the idea of a desktop app for a while now (I've tried similar apps, but the failure rate just seems to make them useless). I just downloaded and tried this, and I have to say, I'm impressed so far.

Response time from the developer seen in earlier comment feedback is also a good sign, so I finally laid down the 20 bucks to become a desktop member. Looking forward to seeing where this goes. Thanks!

Still keeping MUMenu to view the new stuff I don't have yet, though. :)

DP8  AppFresh is a nice application, but the goal of MacUpdate Desktop is to offer a cleaner, faster, and more accurate update experience by leveraging our long history as the leader in Mac software updates. An important part of MacUpdate Desktop is the ability to create Watch Lists of the apps that you care about, and have them synced automatically to your account on the website. You can add new applications to your Watch Lists from the website, and then install them with one click from MacUpdate Desktop. Watch List items will also send you an email the instant a new version is released. We are also focused on providing a better user experience through our Smart Scan system - which shows you the applications and updates that you care about, and not every little applescript executable or helper application or readme.app that can't be updated. Finally, we want to provide the most accurate update information possible and go to great lengths to deliver the most updates to you - AppFresh will often mark an app as being up-to-date when it isn't, or will mark an app as outdated when it isn't or as unknown. We realize that MacUpdate Desktop has room for improvement - and we welcome your feedback. We lowered the membership price specifically so that we could help as many Mac users as possible keep their Mac updated and secure in the easiest way possible. Give it a try, and let is know what you think - desktop@macupdate.com

thanks!

MISHA  We don't list AppFresh because the application doesn't meet our standards. osx.iusethis.com has many listings that are out of date and AppFresh poorly matches a lot, as well.

The last thing we want is for our users accustomed to MacUpdate's comprehensiveness to download AppFresh via us believing that they are getting anywhere near the same experience and then being accordingly disappointed with the result.

If this seems a little incredulous, consider that *many* people when informed of MacUpdate Desktop respond with "Why would I need that? I just use Mac OS X's built-in Software Update."

Not everyone is a savvy power use and MacUpdate Desktop is designed to be useful and approachable for all user levels.
