ROBERTCOOGAN2  It would be nice if it could be set to ignore betas - it keeps telling me Thunderbird is in need of an update when I don't want to download the update.

MISHA  Right-click the Thunderbird listing and choose "Set version to current".

This will remove Thunderbird from the outdated list until there is another update.

TORGOBOB  Its odd that the screenshot shows the red 'close' item as selectable.

When I run this app my 'close' button is grayed out. The only way to keep the app open without the window visible is to hide the app...

I would prefer the ability to close the window while the program silently monitors in the background...

MUTANT  Be careful if you are using Mozilla Prism with MacUpdate Desktop. It will download a commercial math application with the same name and overwrite it. I find it bewildering that this happened, but it did.

DP8  Thanks for the feedback - we will be addressing an issue with apps that have the same name in an upcoming release.

thanks!

DONMONTALVO  Is MacUpdate perfect? No

Is MacUpdate usable? Yes

Is MacUpdate a timesaver? Yes

Is MacUpdate worth the price? Yes

Is MacUpdate support good? Yes

Is MacUpdate worth telling friends/colleagues about? Yes

I bought MacUpdate after testing it for a while. When the trial period ended, I had that "wow, I really want this app" feeling. So it may not be perfect, but it's far, far more efficient than manually going out and finding updates to all your apps.

It's not a solution for a managed environment...but for home users and consultants like me, it's worth its weight in gold. Even if it's not perfect.

MUTANT  List the entire thread, and search for "Mutant" the dev's replied to this topic on a comment I started; here is a short quote:

"MISHA We don't list AppFresh because the application doesn't meet our standards. osx.iusethis.com has many listings that are out of date and AppFresh poorly matches a lot, as well."

I wholeheartedly believe this is pure and indiscriminate abuse of editorial power.. But.. it's their site, and we have a choice to use it or not.

FRD75  This has been nothing but trouble and support has been useless. I tkwpt popping up without warning canceling everything i was doing. to get rid of it, I had to go thru every folder in my root and personal library looking for and deleting everything with TT, techtracker or cnet mentioned.

as far as I am concerned, no other cnet app will ever appear on my computer.

DP8  I think that you may be confusing this with cnet's tech tracker program - MacUpdate is not affiliated with cnet and recommends MacUpdate Desktop over their program, for the reasons you mentioned and more.

RUBAIYAT  Extremely useful and time saver.

Just 2 issues:

I have it crash on me regularly, guess it is working through a long list.

Also need to resolve paid update issues. Certain applications you do not want to update, due to poor quality, upgrade charge, switch from free to pay. Very hard to stop at the moment, would a warning be possible?

DP8  Please send any crash reports to desktop at macupdate.com

As noted in the release notes, version 5.0.4 now alerts users if an update is considered to be a "paid" update.

thanks for the feedback!

***..

ROBOTSPACER  This app is fantastic overall and I'm impressed with how well it works. I've tried every other similar app and widget over long periods of time, and I think this is the clear winner.

I have run into some issues though. The worst is that it will often get "stuck" while checking for updates. The progress bar just stops, it says it's checking on a particular app, and it never proceeds. I have to quit the app and reopen it to get it working again. This happens almost every time I launch the app (about once a week).

Today it's also telling me there's an update to Apple Calculator widget. When I open the MacUpdate.com page, it takes me to the page for MacJournal! http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/7759/calculator This is very strange and makes me nervous what might happen if I update one of my apps to a completely different app. This is the only time I've seen an incorrect match though, which is one of the reasons I prefer this app over the competition.

My last complaint is that the main purpose of this app is to see if your software is up to date. Yet for some reason the "Outdated" filter doesn't stick, and I have to look in four different sections to check on all my software. It would be a tremendous benefit if there was an "Outdated" category in the sidebar, so I could see all of my outdated software in one place. Ideally if I select this view it should take me back there every time I launch the app.

MISHA  Thanks for your thorough review. We'll investigate the issue of MacUpdate Desktop getting stuck, that clearly shouldn't be happening.

Regarding the mismatches, this is caused by a rare bug that we're correcting. As I'm sure you can imagine tracking 10,000s of apps/widgets/prefpanes and their alternatively-named versions (in foreign languages) is no small feet. Occasionally an item's bundle identifier is matched to the wrong MacUpdate listing, as was the case with Calculator & MacJournal. Had you "updated" Calculator you would have simply had MacJournal installed -- we never delete anything from your drive (at most we move a replaced item to the Trash if the older version has the same name as the newer one, and this can be adjusted in the Preferences). Like I said, though, this is a rare bug that we hope to have squashed in the very very near future and I have already corrected this particular instance (go ahead and run MacUpdate Desktop again and Calculator will not show up as outdated!).

We are also refactoring the Outdated behavior to better function how you would like it to.

Thank you for your support and feedback!
