****.

JOHN MALIS  I like Onyx but it indeed has his flaws. I also experience some lag when launching the app. It freezes for about 20 seconds before it is actually usable. Tried a previous version and this does not have this issue.

(Running on MacBook Pro OSX10.6.1)

Still like this for some quick tweaks. Although I also like iTweax. It is almost the same as Onyx but with a thinner/sleeker UI.

Recommended nevertheless.

JAZZICA  No 20 second lag here, John, unless you run the script to verify startup volume.

In Preferences, under the Advanced Tab, you"ll find "Verify the structure of start-up volume at launch".

You have 3 options: Ask, Automatically Verify, and Don't Verify.

Joel makes it very clear in the help files that all apps will freeze, and you might see a beach-ball, but just to WAIT, because it's over in about ... 20 seconds.

So just go in to preferences and pick Don't Verify.

JAZZICA  Perfect, as far as I can tell. Joel removed the "are you sure you want to shut down Onyx" pop-up as it was redundant. That was the only thing out of place, and it is now gone. Fixed.

Every script seems to run seamlessly, and I find that Repair Permissions is as reliable as Disk Utility. The weekly tasks scream by (probably a function of 10.6 Snow Leopard) and the other maintenance and rebuilding scripts run without error.

The cleaning tasks all seem safe to use. There were no hangs on any task, period. My Mac (2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 6 GB 1066 MHz DDR3) runs faster after every session with Onyx.

This is a mature app. Some may not like that it weighs in at 50 MB, mainly from .lproj language files, or that it has a GUI function to make a "metal" window transparent. With stability like this, these kinds of criticisms become meaningless.

What Joel Barriere has done is singular and a testament to his commitment to perfection: he's given us way over a hundred betas, fixed many bugs, learned a new language, learned about every path and every script while Apple threw him curves galore, and came out the other side victorious. This is an app (ok, a really user-friendly wrapper) that has grown over years and years because a developer believed in his vision and created what to me is the finest maintenance/cleaning tool for Mac OS X.

If he charges for the newer versions, I will pay. If not, I will donate. If he feels that the challenge alone is enough, this reflects on his altruistic and giving spirit. I will use Onyx with the knowledge that it is one of those rare creations by a man of rare intelligence and creativity, who wanted to give us something more. He has. Five stars in not enough.

ST00P!D M0NK3Y  Onyx is more than good. And nice use of the asterisk there to cover up your childish profane language.

ST00P!D M0NK3Y  Um... how did this comment get negatives? He sounded pretty sincere to me. There is no... installer for Onyx anymore... it's more convenient because it's now drag and drop with the uninstaller built into the menu. I don't get some of the people on this site. There's nothing wrong with what he said.

JAZZICA  To TheShape,

It's spelled *ss-licking, and it's an honest review for an app I've used for years, and NO, I do not have any connection to the developer. He doesn't pay anyone to write good reviews for him. He doesn't need to. He actually does something constructive with his life. Try doing the same with yours.

JPWGIBSON  I have been using OnyX for several years on 4 Macs and have had nothing but healthy, consistant, reliable, stable machines as a result. This remains true with SL; the only thing having changed is an increase in OnyX's speed and increase in its functions and options.

KINETIC  I've been using OnyX since 10.3 and have never had any problems with it. I was a bit hesitant to use the betas for 2.1 after upgrading to SL, but decided to give it a go given the history of the developer and reliability of the application. I used all of the 2.1 betas without issue and now 2.1 final today without incident. Great work on the application.

JASONFANDORA  Always used Onyx until OSX 10.6 was launched. Several issue pops up every other time.

I had high hopes for this version but nevertheless, it still has issues.

First, it locked up on startup. It is running (and doing nothing) for about 1-2 minutes before it actually reacted on my actions.

Anyway, some tweaks still not work with 0SX10.6. It also lacks some new known tweaks already available for OSX10.6.

Therefore I keep using iTweax2. It has all the new tweaks for OSX10.6 and works a bit better for me in general.

I always liked Onyx but nowadays I cannot ignore the feeling it is not developed as it was in the past. A shame really.

JON555  I've been using this app since the days of 10.4 Tiger and it's never failed me (then again, I never use the betas). It's feature-rich, well developed, and free. Keep up the awesome work devs!
